   Congratulations on having the courage to inquire about increasing your time and money from your dental practice. VERY WELL DONE!  From personal experience, I am confident that I can help you to do both.

 

Dossett_C-1010_RET.JPG  My name is Mike Dossett.  I am a general dentist who graduated from Baylor Dental School in Dallas, Texas in 1971.  I live in Dallas as well.  After graduating from dental school, I practiced for 10 years in Winnsboro (a small town in East Texas).  During that time, I was in Rotary.  I held all the offices in that fine organization including President.  I was even the song leader (although my wife of 42 years – Bev, tells me I can’t carry a tune.)  I was also on the city council and even became Mayor of Winnsboro.  I had one of the largest dental practices in East Texas. 

 

  I moved back to my hometown of Dallas and opened a dental practice that is currently collecting over $2,800,000.00 year.  That wasn’t the way it was when I first opened the practice.  I said back then I had the “life-style of a ten-year dentist but the income of a first-year dentist.” 

 

I bought a second practice (with no money down – I took over the debt) in Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, in May 2002 that was doing less than $15,000.00 month in production and collection.   That practice did over $1,200,000.00 last year.

 

I finished out a space for a dental office just north of Plano (Frisco, Texas) and opened a third practice there in December 2004.  The Frisco practice collected over $1,000,000.00 in 2006.  Between my three offices, I collected $5,000,000.00 in 2006.

 

Now you may be wondering how I can be in 3 dental offices at the same time.  Well, I’m not.  In fact haven’t treated a patient personally since June, 1997.  Yes, I have been retired since 1997.  Up until this year, I only went into the office for a Monday morning staff meeting.  These meetings were an hour long and then I spent 15 – 30 minutes with my office manager(s).  So, I went from practicing in a large practice, to only being in the office 1 – 1-/2 hours a week.  I have increased the time from my office. The stats I gave you were not to brag, but to demonstrate to you that I have also increased the money from my practice(s).

 

  In March of last year, I stopped going into the office altogether.  My key staff members come over to my house on Monday morning for an executive meeting – one hour in length.  

 

 I manage three offices (that I own) that collect $5,000,000.00/ year and I do it on 1 hour/week of my time.  Now, you may understand why I congratulated you on your inquiry to seek information to get more time/money from your practice and why I told you from my experience it can be done.  Dr. Omer Reed used to say that his mother said, "If it’s been done, it’s probably possible.”

 

 

   Others have asked me what do you do, if you only work one hour a week?  My best answer is “anything I want”.  Right now, my passion is golf.  One of my sons and I play golf 4 times a week (but we don’t play on holidays or weekends -- it is too crowded.)  We play Monday through Thursday.  My wife and I travel (as well as our entire family).  My wife stays happily busy with 5 grandchildren who are 4 years and under. 

 

   A number of dentists were asking me “How did you do it?”  So I put together a week-long program at my house and showed them how I did it.  I taught this for three years.  The problem was that it took a week of my time – 10 months out of the year.  When I started to finish out my third office, I stopped teaching the program (and using up weeks of my life).  That program is now available on DVD’s at our website (mikedossett.com).  Besides, I’d rather play golf at this point in my life.

 

   But I do have a sincere desire to help my fellow dentists get more time and money from their dental practices.  I am appalled at the statistics that show 96% of our profession are never financially able to retire. 

 

   I am surprised at the lack of quality information (that actually works) in the area of practice management.  Last year I hired a nationally-well-known practice management company to consult in our Dallas office.   I paid $30,000.00 cash for a one-year program.  We implemented their recommendations.  The first 8 months of the year (before the consultants)  my Dallas office was averaging $235,000.00 month in collections.  In the 4 months after the consultants, my stats showed we had gone down $242,000.00.  I told my office to “go back to the way we were doing it.”  (That was at the end of December, 2005).  We are having our “highest-ever” since that time for collections in our Dallas office.  So I paid $30,000.00 and then lost over $242,000.00 using the consultants.

 

   It seems that consultants now charge from $30,000.00 to $70,000.00 year for their services.  I know of two different people who do “coaching” and charge $12,000.00 year (or $1,000.00 month) and you basically get a newsletter which is mainly “fluff” and coaching calls.  These people are not dentists and only repeat what they have heard from someone else.  Personally, I would hate to take an airplane trip with a pilot who had never been in a cockpit.  It’s like taking golf lessons from someone who has never played the game.
